Jetzt bin ich schon fast einen ganzen Monat wieder zurück... Irgendwie komisch: langsam undschnell zugleich ist die Zeit vergangen. Je länger ich hier bin umso mehr realisiere ich, dass ich nicht mehr in Hyde Park, Chicago bin. Ich würde sagen mein persönliches Tempo ist sehr langsam... auch wenn so vieles so bekannt ist, ist auch hier ein Jahr vergangen und ich merke und mehr und mehr, dass das so ist. Ich freue mich sehr über skype etc., allerdings ist es natürlich nicht optimal. For almost a month now, I have been back... it is still strange: the time has been passing fast and slowly at the same time. The longer I am here, the more I am realizing that I really am no longer in Hyde Park. Everything is going slowly for me, my pace in particular. Even though so much looks familiar here, a year has passed here as well and I am finding this out step by step. It is good to talk over skype, however, it is not the same....
Die Uni hat auch schon angefangen. Hoffentlich bin im Juli scheinfrei, dann ich kann mit meiner Abschlussarbeit beginnen. Aber erst mal durch das Semester kommen. Seitdem ich hier bin, habe ich nach einer WG gesucht... bis jetzt noch ohne Erfolg. Aber ich bin optimistisch: alles neu macht der Mai! School has started and hopefully, at the end of this semester I will have no more classes to take and to start with my final thesis. But first, I have to get through the semester... I am still looking for an apartment with room mates, not too easy. I am hopeful though that I'll find something. There is a saying in German: May makes everything anew (kind of along the words of April showers bring forth May flowers.)
Ansonten fällt mir auf wie "unhöflich" manche Deutschen sind. Nach einem Jahr in einem Land mit einer anderen Definition von Höflichkeit, habe ich auch selbst viele Sachen übernommen und merke, dass ich sie vermisse. Ich glaube, es ist grundsätzlich schon netter, wenn man Leuten begegnet und erst einmal freundlich gesinnt ist und sie so empfängt. Ja, in den USA kümmern sich zum Beispiel Verkäuferinnen im Geschäft gerne um jemanden, selbst wenn man dann doch nichts käuft... Other than that I am noticing how "impolite" Germans are from time to time. After spending one year in a culture with a different definition and standards of politeness, I have adopted ways and am missing them. I think it is just nicer if people don't think the worst of you but have a welcoming attitude e.g. going to a store: it is just refreshing to see that the employees do help you even if you don't buy something....
